What We Receive in the Divine Service

The ​Word

In the Word of God we receive the Law and Promises of God. The Law shows the perfect will of God; for fallen sinners the Law shows us our sin so we may repent and turn back to Him. The Promise of God (the Gospel) is that God has sent His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment your sins and mine deserve. Jesus' death on the cross was for you. His Resurrection from the dead shows how His victory over sin, death, and the devil results in eternal life for all believers in Him.

The ​Sacraments
​
​The Sacraments instituted by Jesus are given to us because we are physical beings. God comes to us through ordinary things: water, bread, and wine. Through the water of Holy Baptism He washes away our sins and claims us as sons and co-heirs of salvation through Jesus. Through the words of Holy Absolution, Jesus forgives your sins. Through the bread and wine of Holy Communion, Jesus gives you His very Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.
